SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT!

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN AT NORTH/SOUTH

Following two years of closely monitoring and analyzing data from Iowa Test of Basic Skills, the Nebraska State Assessment in Reading/Math and K-3 Aims Web assessments, staff at North and South Schools set their school improvement goal for the 2011-2012 school year.  Our goal is to increase the number of students meeting and/or exceeding the spring 2012 math benchmarks on the Aims Web computation assessment, when compared to fall 2011 results.  In order to reach our goal, many changes were implemented, including those listed below:

            • math instructional time extended to 60 minutes

            • school-wide professional reading by classroom teachers on best practice in math

            • implementation of guided math, math work stations for math differentiation

            • weekly L to J quizzes focused on math computation, concepts & applications

            • grade level action plans that support the building goal, such as monitoring

student achievement weekly or biweekly to ensure student progress

            • integration of iPads, iPods, Smart Boards and laptops into math work stations

to increase student engagement, and deepen conceptual understanding

• Professional development throughout the year on teacher in-service days

• After school and summer math intervention programs that include guided math

  instruction with math work stations

Famiy Literacy Night

K-3 students and their families enjoyed a special treat on Tuesday evening, November 15th!  David Nieves, author of "Reptiles Up Close" and "More Reptiles Up Close" brought several of his pet reptiles and years of acquired knowledge about these creatures.  In addition, Mr. Nieves shared many writing tips with students.....including not using 'BORING' words!  One of the favorite creatures was a 150 pound yellow boa!

A special thanks to Mr. Nieves for coming to our school and sharing his knowledge!  We all gained a new appreciation for these interesting animals....and learned some great writing tips, too!
